TETRA: Say no to an unsafe technologyfind out more information about TETRA

Letter to West Sussex Gazette

Sir,

From the beginning of our introduction to the possible problems associated with Tetra, the Editors of the Observer Series, especially the flagship West Sussex Gazette, have been persuaded that there is something about Tetra which differs from mobile phones and which has the potential to cause great distress to the population. The theoretical arguments were not dismissed as they were by Government and Airwave and the knowledge of campaigners and the people of Sussex grew, with the unstinting help from you.

The days of theoretical harm are behind us. We are getting examples daily of real distress from around the country, where rational, intelligent people are making the connection between the arrival of a Tetra installation in their midst and the symptoms they are experiencing.

In view of the lack of testing or research into the effects of Tetra, admitted by the government and its scientists, these causal links suggested by sufferers are not scientifically proved. But there is too much similarity between cases far removed from each other, geographically and from people who are not conspiring or suspect psychosomatics, for the coincidences not to be regarded with the seriousness that is deserved.

While we continue to get reports of headaches, nausea, sleep disturbance and disruption, rashes, localised heating, disorientation, dizziness, confusion, itchiness, epileptic episodes, disturbed behaviour patterns in humans and animals, these effects are transitory. When the Tetra masts are turned off after a period of exposure, as in Littlehampton and last week in Ludgershall near Andover, the affected people experience a sense of physical relief and a lifting of the energy-sapping feeling of relentless pressure which they feel when affected near to Tetra masts. This is proof enough to those who experience the change to persuade them that Tetra is, without doubt, responsible.

The interference with TV pictures which tends to accompany the symptoms described above points to the possible long-term health effects from Tetra, which have not been quantified and will not become evident for years, perhaps. But while the escape from Tetra, where possible, is accompanied by a return to normal TV reception and a gradual return to rude health, the cumulative effects of long-term exposure to cell-damaging low-level radiation emissions may have already initiated processes internally which are irreversible.

We need to know what these effects might be in order to prevent them. We need to know who is suffering, where, how badly and why. The government will not gather this information and has so far given no indication that if it were to be gathered they would take action to reduce or eliminate its impact. But we will gather it regardless, to argue the case for all sufferers. We urge your readers and everybody to report symptoms, however trivial, on the www.protectsussexfromtetra.org website and help us to fight for everyone's right to live normal lives free from the debilitating effects of Tetra.

Yours sincerely,

John O’Brien, Arundel
