TETRA: Say no to an unsafe technologyfind out more information about TETRA

Home Office reply to the challenge to government departments

Our open challenge to government (see letters index) suggested that any live experiment would be unethical, whereas planting masts in neighbourhoods appeared to be acceptable to government.

Dear Mr Davidson

Thank you for your letter of 21 April 2004 about TETRA technology.

I do not think it would be possible in practice to carry out the experiment you suggest. I doubt that it is feasible to find two locations so similar in all the ways you suggest. Even if two such areas could be found, it is not possible to control all the many factors (such as weather, or exposure to sick friends and family) that might affect people's health.

You might be interested to know that the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme I referred to in my letter of 5 April is planning to carry out research (in controlled circumstances) in hypersensitivity symptoms associated with electromagnetic field exposure. More details on this research can be found at: www.mthr.org.uk/ research_projects/hypersensitivitysymptoms.htm.

Yours sincerely
