Information and Petition Day, 8 April, Guildbourne Centre, Worthing

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this a really sucessful day. We were delighted by the response of people who approached us throughout the day, from 9.00 am to 3.30 pm, outside the Guildbourne Centre in Worthing.

With our big banner, table, posters and a over a thousand leaflets, we provided information about TETRA and asked people to sign our petition to have the Woodside Road mast turned off. We handed out all our leaflets (with surprisingly few refusals and a great deal of interest) and collected over 400 signatures.

Police Community Consultation evening, Felpham, 29 March 2004

At a completely packed out meeting chaired by Dr James Walsh, Sussex Police Authority, members of the audience from across the county put TETRA firmly on the agenda. Despite the cost and the significance of the Airwave system to Sussex Police over the next few years, they had not mentioned it on their agenda of forward-looking policing and community relations. A number of those present made the case for switching TETRA masts off, investigating the health reports being made county-wide, and establishing the true risks of TETRA before, not after, being implemented.

The Sussex Police Airwave Project Manager said he would not tell us that TETRA is safe, and Dr Walsh confirmed that he would take up the matter of investigating the many reports of ill health with colleagues in Arun Council and the Health Authority.

Meeting of Worthing Borough Council Executive, 22 March 2004

Seven of us attended the meeting, at which each of us presented a question to the Council about aspects of TETRA safety and nuisance. Our urging them to action and to finding out what was going on, especially with respect to the health issues, but including interference, were accepted very positively. The Executive do feel their hands are tied, and are seeking experiences from other Councils in similar situations. They also intend to work with the Local Government Association to see what collective action may be appropriate.

With respect to surveying the health concerns, the Executive felt that the size of this issue was such that it should be referred to the Director of Public Health (see letters).
