TETRA and the police: a letter of notice

Dear

SOUTH WALES POLICE TETRA COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK IN SWANSEA AND GOWER

As a Member of the Police Authority, you know about our concerns of the impact of the TETRA system on the health of serving officers and the public to whom you have a statutory duty of care.

Repeatedly drawn to your attention has been worldwide research, linking the low frequency emissions at 17.64Hz of TETRA masts to the disruption of sleep patterns, causing the breakdown of the melatonin process and subsequent immune problems leading to the body’s inability to fight off illness such as cancer and Motorneurone Disease. Where the TETRA mast have been erected there are already a number of people who are experiencing ill health. It is quite unacceptable that you choose to ignore the evidence and facts which have been put before you. Your rôle is to protect us, not put our health at risk. This is made all the worse, in that we, the Taxpayers will be expected to pay for this TETRA system, when there is a safer, less expensive option available. Despite our representations to you and repeated requests to consider the safer alternatives to TETRA, you have carried on regardless.

We have, therefore, taken legal advice and now put you on notice, that, at such time that the links between the TETRA Telecommunications Police Network and ill health in communities are established, you will be held responsible for the damage to health and devaluation of property. Appropriate compensation will be duly sought. Henceforth, we will deem you to have full knowledge of the effects that the TETRA communications network is having on local populations and your future actions will have to be judged in the light of that knowledge.

May we take this opportunity to bring to your attention the following two statements:

1. Extracted from Dutch 3G report:

The Health Council of the Netherlands and ICNIRP conclude that the data on non-thermal effects are insufficient to serve as the basis for exposure guidelines.

2. Extract from Police Federation website. Section entitled, ‘Where we stand’:

New technology

Technology must be thoroughly tested before introduction and must only be used once verified as safe and suitable. We look forward to the formation of a joint central body to determine requirements in technical, scientific and ICT advances and to oversee product development. Where chief constables do not intend to implement the recommended technology, they should be required to notify their police authority, setting out their reasons for not doing so.

(N.B. Please note that the expectation inferred from the above statement is that Chief Constables have a choice. If they did not, why did the Government have to ‘bribe’ the police to take up Tetra with the promise of a share in £500m?)

Yours sincerely

etc.
